EXPRESSIONS. MONEY


a penny for your thoughts        = when you want to know what another person is thinking

bet one's bottom dollar             = when you are completely certain that sth is true or will happen

break even                                = to have no profit or loss

buy sb off                                  = to bribe or pay sb so that they do not cause you any trouble

cook the books                         = when sb dishonestly changes the figures in the accounts to still
                                                     money

cut your losses                         = to avoid losing any money than you have already lost

decide to foot the bill               = to pay for everything

(buy) for a song                        = very cheaply

get sth at face value                = to pay exactly the amount of money printed on the item
                                                    (stamps,...)

go Dutch                                  = to agree to share the cost of sth, especially a meal; to pay for
                                                    themselves

grease sb's palm                      = to secretly give sb money to stop the threats

have a nest egg                       = to save and hold money for special purpose (emergencies,
                                                    retirement,...)

live beyond my means            = to spend far money than sb is earning

pay an arm and a leg for sth   = to pay too much money for sth; sth to be far too expensive

strap for (cash)                        = needing sth, usually money; low money or without money
